What do you do when your weekend is rainy and there’s no place to go? You do some fun arts and crafts at home! Yay! Kids will love it, but will you? Most probably, you will struggle with finding the right paint at home to include in this activity. No worries! We’ll help you create your own, home-made finger paint. But that’s not all! We will also have fun creating our Thanksgiving cards and decorations with kids.
This is all done with ingredients we all have at home, so no need to spend money for any of them.
Ingredients for a home-made finger paint
So, let’s check our cupboards and refrigerators for these ingredients:
- Flour or cornstarch
- Food colors
- Put 2 tablespoons of sugar into a pan
- Put 1/3 cups of flour or cornstarch into the pan
- Add 2 cups of water
- Mix it all together
- Put the mixture onto the stove, turn on the heat and stir until you get a thick mixture
- Pour the mixture int the cups
- Add food colors to each cup, mix them with the spoon and leave them to cool
There you go! Your home-made finger paint is ready! Now let’s see what we can create with it.
Thanksgiving finger painted turkey
Let’s prepare a nice decoration with our palms! Color the palm with red, green, yellow, blue and navy blue colors. You would need to help your little ones by using your hand to put each color on their palms (as shown on the image above). When the little palms are ready place them on a white piece of paper to leave a nice trace on it. Ones it dries, use a back market to draw legs and an eye – and your finger paint turkey is done!
You can use more than one paper and create a hand paint turkey collage as your Thanksgiving decoration.
Footprints Thanksgiving cards
Everything you did for the finger painted turkey now applies for this fun footprint activity. Our footprints will be our Thanksgiving greeting cards which kids can give to their family member on Thanksgiving day.
So, what we’ll do is put paint on our little feet. You might want to use your hands here again, to help your little ones create a colorful greeting card. Tickle the little feet with different colors and have them step on a white piece of paper. Once their foot is on the paper, let it dry and then cut the paper out, place it on the blanks foot image (shown above) and glue it. That way, you will have one blank side to write your own, special Thanksgiving greetings.
Download a blank foot here and enjoy making your home-made foot greeting cards that will delight your kids, as well as the whole family.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving arts and crafts with your family! This is another way of bonding over and over, so have fun getting messy together. Feel free to use the same activity for any other special occasions, such as Christmas and birthday parties.
